In the latest episode of On the Marie Curie Couch, bereavement expert Jason Davidson meets Beverley Knight.
Actress, singer and writer Beverley Knight is perhaps best-known for the eight studio albums she has released in the UK, with notable singles including Come As You Are and Coulda Woulda Shoulda. She has also had a successful career in musical theatre, appearing in West End shows such as The Bodyguard and Cats. In this episode of On the Marie Curie Couch, Beverley talks about two significant bereavements she has experienced – losing her best friend, Tyrone, and her beloved dad, Eddie.
The power of music
“I came to terms with Dad physically no longer being here on the day of the funeral… I come from a musical family,” says Beverley. “…The way we get through everything in life is music and singing, because that’s our first instrument and that’s how we got through that day. With song. Yes. We sang the sorrow out.”
Finding comfort
“You find the comfort wherever you can and sometimes it’s the most – to anybody else – insignificant thing that might bring you joy,” says Beverley.
"When [people describe my dad], they always talk about his hat, or hats, because he had a few. So, in my wardrobe are a couple of Dad’s hats.”
