In the latest episode of On the Marie Curie Couch, bereavement expert Jason Davidson meets Oscar-winner Dustin Lance Black.
Oscar-winning filmmaker, writer and activist Dustin Lance Black lives in London with his husband, British Olympic diver Tom Daley and their young son. In this episode of On the Marie Curie Couch, Lance talks about his mother, Roseanna, who died in 2014. Roseanna was the inspiration behind Lance’s recent memoir, Mama’s Boy.
Facing mortality
Lance describes following his mum’s ambulance to hospital, and how his cab driver brought the situation into stark reality: “He looked up in the rearview mirror and said, ‘Whatever will be now, will be,’ and it was the first moment I ever considered that my mum was mortal.”
We are whispers
Lance is very familiar with the challenges of death and grief, having lost countless family members and friends in recent years.
"It forces us to face and accept something that’s very difficult for many people about this beautiful thing called life, which is how ephemeral it is, how much we are all whispers, and that’s hard.”
