Together we won a crucial change that will help end the postcode lottery for palliative care in England and make end of life care fair.
Following our campaign, the government made a crucial change to their Health and Care Bill.
The change will mean that in the future end of life care must be provided by law in every part of England where local people need it. This will in time help to end the postcode lottery for palliative care that currently faces so many people at the end of their lives.
This is brilliant news, and we are so grateful for the help of Marie Curie supporters in making this happen. Our campaigning to ensure no dying person misses out on care isn't over, but for now, we are delighted with this huge step forward.
What did the campaign call for?
The government's Health and Care Bill was a once in a generation opportunity to make sure that all dying people in England get the care they want and need.
Yet when it was first published, the Bill was set to be a missed opportunity to ensure the right care is available for everyone at the end of life.
Together we campaigned successfully for a change to the Bill which will make it a legal requirement to provide palliative care in every part of England where local people need it.
What happens next?
The Bill became law in 2022. After it is enacted, we will continue to campaign to ensure that people in every part of the country can get the end of life and palliative care they need.
