Cycle Scotland, coast to coast and discover the natural beauty of Scotland by bike while raising money for your local Marie Curie Nurses.

Starting at on the west coast of Scotland in Cairnryan, you will cover almost 300 miles, over five days, across the breath-taking countryside of the south of Scotland, to Eyemouth, and on to your final destination of Scotland's capital city of Edinburgh.

Itinerary

Day 1

Cairnryan to Newton Stewart

Appx. 31 miles
Elevation: 1,473 feet

After meeting, lunch, and registration at Cairnryan, we have a half day cycling.Meeting times will coincide with ferry arrivals from Northern Ireland. Newton Stewart is a small town for us to stay at the end of a busy first day for those travelling to the start.

Day 2

Newton Stewart - Dumfries

Appx. 53 miles
Elevation: 3,097 feet

Good largely flat country cycling on our way to Dumfries which is the largest town in Dumfries & Galloway. It is a bustling town and with Robert Burns connections there is plenty going on.

Day 3

Dumfries - Selkirk

Appx. 58 miles
Elevation: 2,759 feet

We move from Dumfries & Galloway into the Scottish Borders today on the way to the Royal and Ancient Burgh of Selkirk which stands high above the Ettrick and Yarrow Valleys in the heart of the Scottish Borders.

Famous for its braes and wynds, and sudden unexpected views.

Day 4

Selkirk to Berwick, via Eyemouth

Appx. 57 miles
Elevation: 2,671 

We complete the coast to coast element of our cycle in the small picturesque town of Eyemouth. From there we make the short 7 mile or so cycle over the border into England to stay overnight in Berwick-upon-Tweed, England's most northerly town.

Day 5

Berwick - Edinburgh

Appx 68 miles
Elevation: 2,677 feet

A mix of flat coastal cycling taking in some rolling countryside and great coastal views as we make our way up to Scotland's stunning capital city. We will follow the east coast before reaching out final hotel destination and enjoying all that Edinburgh has to offer with a celebration meal.

Day 6

Return home

After staying overnight in Edinburgh, you'll be transferred by bus back to Cairnryan, or you can stay on to take in the sights of this beautiful and historic city, or make your own way home from Edinburgh.

How the money you raise helps

£180 pays for someone with a terminal illness to attend the day therapy unit at the hospice.

£400 pays for someone to stay in a Marie Curie Hospice for 24 hours, so that they can receive the hands-on care they need in their final days.

£1,250 pays for a portable oxygen system that will relieve distressing symptoms, so a person doesn’t have to be confined to bed.

    Registrations are now open.

    To apply for your place on Cycle Scotland download the application form using the link at the top of the mariecurie.org.uk/cycle-scotland home page.

    Then email the completed form to SportEcosse@sportecosse.co.uk

    You will then be contacted by Sport Ecosse regarding paying the registration fee - once paid you're all set to go.

  • You must be 18 years old or over to take part. The group size will be approximately 20-40 with people of all ages and backgrounds. The majority will be on their own, but some will go with friends, partners or relatives. The event will be tough and exhilarating, but it will be fantastically rewarding and is suitable for anyone with a bit of grit, determination and willingness to work as part of a team.

  • All our challenges are designed to suit people who are fit and have trained to take part – the fitter you are, the more you will enjoy the adventure. We expect all participants to be prepared for challenging days of cycling up to 84 miles. This challenge is not suitable for those who have not cycled this distance in their training rides.

  • You will need your own bike, helmet (which must be worn at all times during the cycle) and general cycling kit. We will send you a recommended packing list in your welcome pack which will detail any specialist equipment you may need.

  • Clean water is provided throughout the trip. All meals are provided on the challenge and will include lots of carbohydrates such as pasta and potatoes, along with cereals, bread, fresh fruit, vegetables and eggs, plus some meat. There will be vegetarian options at every meal. Please let us know in advance of any special dietary requirements and feel free to bring a few of your favourite snacks.

  • Beforehand: You will be sent a fundraising pack with great tips on how to meet your sponsorship target. We will be in touch regularly and will organise a briefing day where you’ll meet other trekkers and hear more about the challenge. We'll invite you to a social media group where you can arrange to meet fellow participants for training events and social gatherings. 

    During the trip: Your group will be accompanied by a tour leader, as well as a Marie Curie representative. First Aid qualified, Sport Ecosse events staff will also be on hand to give encouragement, along with regular briefings on safety, the route and progress made. Your luggage will be transported by vehicle to each night's accommodation. There will also be bike maintenance to carry out basic repairs if required (there may be costs involved if parts are required)

  • The cycle will be in in Scotland. In September it is very difficult to predict what the weather will be like. For this reason, we ask that you plan for both wet and windy weather but also for the possibility of warm weather. As you will see from the kit list both waterproof clothing and sun cream are essentials.

  • Any participants who is traveling from outwith the UK or Northern Ireland should have a valid passport and visa (if applicable) to enter the country.

  • Anyone wanting to stay on after the trek can arrange to do so through Sports Ecosse at an additional cost and subject to availability.

  • We require the 80% minimum of £1,760 by 24 June 2025. The remainder of the sponsorship is due four weeks after you return from the event.
