Marie Curie welcomes focus on end of life care in NHS Mandate

Comment published

Marie Curie welcomes today’s publication of the NHS Mandate and the direction this will give to the National Commission Board. We are pleased to see the inclusion of end of life care as a priority area.  Imelda Redmond CBE, Director of Policy and Public Affairs said:

"We are pleased that the Government has listened to those, who are concerned that care of the dying did not feature in draft version of the Mandate. At Marie Curie we know that there is much more to be done to ensure that people who are terminally ill can die in the place of their choice and experience the best possible quality of care.

"We know that many people who are terminally ill still struggle to access the care they need. If end of life care had not been included in the NHS Mandate there was a real risk that fewer people would have been able to access high quality palliative and end of life care services.

"We welcome today’s announcement and look forward to working with the NHS Commissioning Board and Clinical Commissioning Groups to ensure that people who are terminally ill and their families can get access to high quality care."
