Our vision

Using the strongest possible evidence base for decision-making gives us the best chance of helping more people have a better end of life.

The four parts of our strategy

  • We focus our efforts on achieving outcomes across key thematic priority areas.
  • We seek to maximise our impact across the four UK nations and in localities, taking bespoke approaches where needed, and also coordinating activities across the UK.
  • We deliver an integrated approach to building our research evidence base, developing policy recommendations and influencing change in policy and practice.
  • We consistently review and learn from our impact. This plan will be dynamic and develop as new learning emerges.

How we do research and policy work

Our research and policy work aims to build robust evidence on the end of life experience to influence change in policy and practice. We work across key thematic priority areas to ensure we’re achieving outcomes that improve the end of life experience for all.
To maximise our impact, we tailor our recommendations to different decision-makers across the four UK nations and in localities and take bespoke approaches where needed. We regularly work in partnership with others to strengthen our voice and influence. At a national level, we coordinate activities across the UK and build on our strong relationships with UK parliamentarians and develop our presence in Westminster.
Everything we do aims to drive fundamental change so that everyone can have the best possible quality of life to the end. We regularly monitor our activity so we understand the difference we’re making and we have robust governance in place to explore more ways we can improve end of life care for all in the UK.

Our focus for research and policy

  • Mental and physical health and wellbeing: To provide quality care and support for the mental and physical health and wellbeing of people affected by terminal illness.
  • Financial insecurity: To end financial insecurity at end of life, and ensure that everyone has the support they need to address their practical concerns.
  • Relationships, carers and bereavement: To ensure that everyone affected by death and dying – including the family, friends and carers of the dying person – are supported through and beyond the end of life.
  • Inequity at the end of life: To end inequity in end of life experience by ensuring access to excellent standards of care and support for all.
