Response to Ofgem's energy price cap announcement

Mark Jackson, senior research and policy manager at end of life charity Marie Curie, said: "A reduction in the energy price cap will be welcome news for many households across the country. For many thousands of families affected by terminal illness, however, the worry about how to pay their bills will go on. The need to power specialist medical equipment in the home and additional heating and cooling needs to manage their condition can see them paying annual bills thousands of pounds above an average household's.

"Although the cap is being reduced in October, market volatility it could see it rise again in January. This uncertainty makes it impossible for families affected by terminal illness to plan their finances, often at a time where many have given up work and rely on working age benefits. Terminally ill people and their families will need targeted support from Government this winter to ensure they can afford to turn on their heating and power their medical equipment, which in many cases keeps them alive."
