ITV’s Text Santa appeal raises over £5.2m

Press release published

Marie Curie Cancer Care is thrilled to announce that the charity has received an incredible £873,330 from ITV’s Text Santa appeal. Marie Curie was one of six charities chosen by ITV to benefit from the 2012 Christmas appeal, which raised more than £5.2m to be shared by Marie Curie and five other UK charities.

The funds raised will enable Marie Curie Nurses to provide over 43,000 hours of care to people with terminal illnesses in their own homes.

The Text Santa appeal show on ITV1 on Friday, December 21, was a night of star-studded entertainment that raised crucial funds and awareness of the charities’ work. This included a powerful film that shared the story of a patient in Stoke-on-Trent and showed how the care provided by Marie Curie Nurse Sally Babb and her colleagues made it possible for him to remain in his home with his loved ones.

Throughout December, a large range of fundraising activities took place across the country and other ITV shows also gave their backing to the appeal and highlighted the work of Marie Curie Nurses, including This Morning, Lorraine and The Jeremy Kyle Show.

Fabian French, Director of Fundraising at Marie Curie Cancer Care, said: “We are so grateful to ITV for choosing Marie Curie to be one of the charities benefiting from Text Santa and to viewers for the immense generosity they’ve shown in supporting the appeal. In addition to the crucial funds raised, this has also been a wonderful opportunity to raise awareness of the work Marie Curie Nurses do all year round providing care and support for terminally ill patients and their families. Every penny raised from the appeal will be used to ensure that more people with terminal illnesses are able to receive the care they need at the end of their lives at home.”
