Marie Curie actively carries out research across our services to explore how we can improve different types of care and support, and we give the people we care for the opportunity to take part. Learn more about how we support research in our hospices and across our services in the UK.

Why are researchers based in our hospices?

As well as providing expert care, our hospices are research hubs for helping us improve care and support for people living with any terminal illness. They allow researchers to connect with the people we support, families, staff and volunteers, making it easy for them to take part in a project if they wish to.

Supporting research at the highest level

The Marie Curie Senior Research Fellowship Scheme supports researchers to establish themselves within the field of palliative and end of life care research. Hosted by a university, our research fellows work closely with their local Marie Curie services and policy colleagues in the charity to develop their research and ensure the people we support are at the centre of their work.
Over the last six years, the programme has strengthened the research culture across the organisation. We’ve seen an increase in research studies using our hospices as recruitment sites as well as more hospice staff members getting involved in research.

Promoting and embedding research

Working closely with senior research fellows, our research nurses work in local teams across the country to champion and promote research and what it can do. They play a vital role in engaging staff with the evidence needed to provide optimal care and support and they identify evidence gaps which require further research.
Our research nurses identify, attract and deliver research so the people we support have the opportunity to participate in projects, like clinical trials, aimed at improving end of life care for all.
They also develop close links with local research organisations. Many of our nurses are now developing and leading research projects, some through PhD scholarships and are supported by local academic mentors.
